normal special

I think that it's better to just be introduced as pretty normal.

Or at least, normal in the way that it is normal for everyone to be special. Not more special, necessarily. Just normal special.

Let me explain.

Before meeting someone recently, a mutual friend described him to me as the funniest person I've ever met in the world, among other things.

And not even meaning to, I start thinking that wow, this guy has got to be just hilarious. And suddenly I am totally excited to have my own version of Jim Gaffigan in my life. He'll sing the Hot Pocket! song and then just when you think that he's exhausted the joke completely, he'll throw a curve ball and sing it in Spanish: Caliente Pocket! And you'll think it's even funnier because you had a horse named Caliente when you were little and wow, how ironic, and boy isn't that funny?

At least, that's the kind of stuff that happens when I listen to Jim Gaffigan.

But now that I've met this guy? I keep waiting for the Extreme Funny to happen.

For the punch line, so to speak.

But it still hasn't happened. In fact, at times he has not even picked up on my sarcasm!

But if I had had no preconceived notions about his omnipotent sense of humor, then I would probably just think that sure, he's funny. Yet, because I had this expectation and keep measuring him against it, he unfortunately comes out lacking.

Poor guy.

Not his fault at all, and he really is an awesome individual; he's just not the funniest person in the world but really, who is?!?!

So anyway, that is why I think it might be a good idea to avoid referring to others as the MOST IN THE WORLD of anything, really.

Unless when it comes to a lack of sense of direction, cause then I totally win.

You're right. And smart...for an average, normal girl.

However, if a Mom tells people that her daughter is retarded, people are really impressed by how well the daughter does!

Yeah, but the guy probably is pretty funny to most people who don't have the name Latshaw. I mean, come on, you have to admit that with your family, people have to meet a pretty high standard in order to rise above what you consider to be ordinary funniness.

Sherri, ha! and why thank you...:)

Mom--true, Mimi set the bar so low with that one that you couldn't help but impress! But you'd impress even if people told others that you were amazing!!!

Peaj--I am surrounded by a pretty hilarious tribe, so there is that...And really, the guy IS funny, just you know, not the FUNNIEST GUY IN THE WORLD. EVER. Which reminds me that I don't love the tag line for my show (The best musical. Ever), because yeah, it's great, but there are so many fantastic musicals out there--do we really have to say one is the BEST?!?!

I love Jim Gaffigan's Hot Pocket bit. And compared to that? Everybody's a disappointment. I get it.

I've decided to take your advice. I'm going to start introducing people to other people with a nice "This is my friend Jessica. She's pretty darn boring, so don't set your expectations too terribly high." Then, then will be delighted to find out the opposite is true.

I am so glad you love Jim Giffigan too--I really want to see him live at some point. You know, when the stars are aligned just right and I am not working and blah blah blah...And you are too sweet!!!

I put him on my calendar for when he comes to Dallas - September 25. Unfortunately, that's the weekend we're in Orlando (and I'll by hanging out with Ellyn, so I guess I'll be okay with that!) :)

Are you there for one of Jack's competitions? And how awesome that you get to hang with Ellyn--totally trumps the show. People before entertainment, I always say...

Yeah, we’ll be there that weekend for a national tournament. I’m really excited – usually the only Nationals we get to go to is in Vegas every year, and I’m getting pretty sick of Vegas. This one should be a nice change!

Maybe the guy has heard that he's supposed to be the funniest person in the universe so is under incredible pressure to be funny, which makes it tough to be?

Jessica said...

Mandy--that is a nice change for you guys!!! And Florida can be beautiful:)

Pop--perhaps. That kind of pressure can be inhibiting, for sure!

So, Jess, considering this post and an earlier one, I guess you wouldn't mind me simply telling people you are a nice person, or you have a nice voice?

Re: Mandy and Jack's comment:

"This is Jessica. She's nothing special."
"Hi, Jessica. What do you do?"
"I'm a professional dancer, singer and actor. I'm currently touring in Japan."

Yeah, that might give it away right there. Lowered expectations blown away in 4 seconds flat.

KK--ANYTHING but nice!!!!

Peaj--some would not be impressed by that at all. Now tell them that I asked drew if JAPAN IS NEAR THE WATER when I first got here?

They would be totally impressed.

Or they would be totally something!

I mean, you know, if you think that's impressive or something. ;-)
