Yep, I am on tour

You Know You're On Tour When...

  • You are in line at Popeye's (don't judge, those biscuits are good) and you have to ask the stranger next to you what city you are in.
  • Then, you ask her what state you're in.
  • You think you are in Mountain Time, until the IHOP server breaks it to you that you aren't; that even though you traveled on a bus for five hours, you are still, in fact, in Pacific Time.
  • You can pick up a suitcase and know by feel if it is either under or over 50 lbs.
  • You can read a book, love it, then leave it behind in a hotel room (or give it away) because you have to keep your suitcase under 50 lbs.
  • You become very bold when it comes to playing strange pianos--and have learned the knack of looking like you are supposed to be playing it (in the hotel lobby, in the theater lobby, even the gym lobby) so that nobody questions you anymore--people even ask if you take requests.
  • You learn the staples of groceries: pb&j, pb&j, pb&j. Oh, and cereal.
  • You can look at a hotel and instantly know if they have good beds, a complimentary hot breakfast (or just the cold kind), and a piano.
  • You really don't know what you would do without your GPS.  Probably have to think or something (God forbid). Or read a map (so many little squiggly lines...)
  • Mondays become Saturdays, glorious, lazy-or-not-if-don't-want Saturdays.
  • People ask you if you are coming to their city and unless you are going there next week you can't say for sure.
  • You just give up on watching any of your favorite shows in real time; good-bye Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, and (sniff sniff) The Office.
  • A mini-fridge suddenly makes a vast difference in your life.
  • A plane trip is no longer exciting; rather, just kind of annoying.
  • You get a little envious of people who have real, honest-to-goodness weekends.
  • You stop feeling so bad about grocery shopping at CVS.
  • Going to the Whole Foods is like a trip to Disney Land.
  • You learn to carry home around in your heart.
  • And lastly, home ALWAYS seems perfect, even if it wasn't necessarily perfect when you were last there; it remains a mirage in the desert, a land flowing with milk and honey and just the knowledge that it is there, waiting for you to come back is enough to get you through all of the mandatory tomorrows until then.

Great list. From the PB and J and Cereal grocery list item I have to wonder... maybe I'm on tour and didn't even know it?

I like the pictures you added on the right too.

Ha. Maybe you are...And if so, maybe you should ask for per diem!

Or maybe it's just a Latshaw thing?

Thanks--I am excited about those, too!

And now you are doing what I always do on your blog--add repeat comments!

What good books have you read lately, and how could you leave them behind????

Jessica said...

Well, my mom sent me a whole slew of them! There was this one Scottish mystery book, then another one whose title escapes me at the moment...I read Blue Like Jass, Painted Desserts, and To Own a Dragon--all by Donald Miller and all absolutely the salt of the earth. And right now, I am reading Life of Pi--it's fantastic and I highly recommend it to all!!!!

Can a book be salt of the earth? Huh.

Jessica said...

It can when you are writing at 3 am!!!

Honestly, you guys are such a brother and sister! I am waiting for the "am not!", "are too!" comments to start flying!! ;-)

I guess I'll stop lurking, now that I've finally caught up from the beginning (having just discovered this blog last week).
I made a similar list, "you know you've been flying too much" for our tour newsletter on Mamma Mia!
1. You are surprised when a toilet doesn't flush or a sink doesn't turn on automatically because you've been using so many public bathrooms.
2. You have a "regular" order at the restaurants between terminals at ORD and DFW, because you've had so many layovers there.
3. You immediately know what ORD and DFW stand for.
Love your writing! Please please please tell me the next time you are playing the piano, even if it's the hotel lobby or an open mic night. I was bummed to miss it in LA and would love to come.

Anna-how kind of you to read my blog and comment! Great list, too;-)

I will definitely tell you next time I am playing, too!

And that's pretty amazing that you caught up here in just a week!
