The Plan

My dear, smart friend John and I have had this plan that we were supposed to launch here in Tempe.  It is this: go to bed earlier, wake up earlier.  It was called Operation East Coast Time, and the idea was that we would try to acclimate ourselves to the east coast time zone now, so that when we were home with our loved ones, we weren't sleeping until 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

So far, we have been failing miserably.

It started out pretty good, actually.  Monday, I had to wake up early--like 7 am--so that was a good kick start for The Plan.  Tuesday, a little bit of a diversion, but still not too bad since I was waking up in the dreaded nines.  Wednesday, in the tens.  Thursday, still in the tens; not exactly The Plan, but I still had some week left to put it into full gear.  But today?

I didn't get up till 12!!!!  Uh-oh, The Plan tanked.  It is beginning to look like a failed mission, and I am pretty sure our commanding officers are about to tell us to abort.  Or save face and pretend that we never tried it in the first place.  But the sad truth is that we did.  We did!!!

And sleeping that late is pretty tough on the system, I think.  It's like a part of me still feels asleep all throughout the day; like my body just figured that since it was noon already, and I still hadn't gotten up, that was all that was on today's itinerary.  In response, it then proceeded to turn off whatever produces energy and the ability to not blink so often or yawn quite so much.

And I tried to get myself energized, I really did.  I pulled out all the stops--went to the gym, nothing.  Ate a delicious pita, nope.  Took a shower, not a spark of energy to be found.  Read the Bible, still tired.  Performed a two hour musical, tried not to yawn openly on stage.  Ate a pizookie (a delicious concoction that involves a skillet-cooked, half-baked cookie with ice cream on top; John and I shared it, maybe out of self-pity over our failed plan but probably more because it looked and was delicious), oh--and still exhausted.  I guess the good news is that it is now once again time for bed, which means it will soon once again be time to try to get up. In the morning.

Okay, so I am betting that I am not alone here.  I would venture to say that at some point in your life you slept late.  What is the latest you have ever slept?  I am looking for a winner here...

I once went to bed at 10pm and woke up at 6 . . . pm. The next day.

2 Days....and counting

Oh gosh, that is so hard to say. I used to have some really weird sleep schedules, particularly in high school and college. At one point in college I would be up until 3am, get up at 7 for an 8am class, then sleep in the afternoon for 3-4 hours. So when was my "main" sleep - during the day, or during the night? If you count sleeping during the day as my main sleep, then I sometimes would wake up at 8 or 9pm.

By the way, I loved this sleep schedule - I would feel great at night.

I went to bed at 5 this morning and got up at 10:42 because my tricksy husband said it was 12:42! I would have gone back to bed for 2 more hours except he said he was going to pick up Sherry and the baby and bring them over. Does it count if I fell asleep in the chair downstairs first? If it does, that's okay, because regularly throughout this summer I almost never went to bed before 1 a.m. and I often went to bed at 3 or 4 a.m. You may check some of my past posts to Jess' and Jase's blogs (even my blog) for proof, if you need it. ;-) I am pretty sure there is at least one that is after 3 in the morning and many after 2 a.m.!

Training to sleep a different time schedule doesn't ever really work for me, because it's like when Mom used to make us go to bed earlier the week before school would start and we would rise up in rebellion.

You change your sleeping patterns when you need to!
